A gold statue of Sophia Loren brings life into Piazza d’Italia, a Postmodern “ruin” in New Orleans.

The New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts’ “On the Edge” gallery series kicks off the 2011-2012 season with an Alumni Exhibition taking place September 1 – September 30, 2011 with the opening reception on Thursday, September 1, 6pm – 8pm. NOCCA is located at 2800 Chartres Street in New Orleans. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 12pm to 5pm, and Saturday, 12pm to 3pm. Admission is free.
The exhibition features two- and three-dimensional work in a variety of media by Zarouhie Abdalian, Rachel Avena Brown, Amanda Cassingham, Kayleigh Maier, Bonnie Maygarden, and Jonathan Taube.

Hollywood born and past New Orleans character, Justin Forbes’ work is narrative and autobiographical in nature. His life and art overlap as many events and dreams of his make their way into his large, crowded settings. as if you are watching a performance or challenged as a voyeur.

Flavor Paper, a once New Orleans now Brooklyn based wallpaper company, has some of the raddest designs. The above, Onda is one of my favorites. This is a photo of a bathroom in the Treme. Their variety of style and use of metallics are the ish. Look through their site, you might recognize wallpapers you’ve seen all over the world. Recently, they fabricated for the Fools Gold Records store.
Before their big move to NY, I had the opportunity to participate in a fashion show with local artist Ellen Macomber. She created fashion out of Flavor Paper and models walked the long press used to make Flavor’s wallpapers. Wish there were photos from it!
